Fantastically summery pop music, this. The (occasionally Chipmunksesque) vocals on this CD single stay on just the right side of sugary overload, and the clean, clear, pin-sharp music seems designed for no other reason than to get you outside, dancing, in the sun, probably with an indie kid bowl haircut, Pastels t-shirt and hairslide... whilst playing along on a variety of toy synthesisers. The music mixes the vigour of early Bis with the finesse of late St Etienne; all perky electronic drumbeats, gliding electronified pop sounds and low-in-the-mix (at least for the most part) guitar melodies. Whilst this kind of 60s-tinged electropop might not be particularly original, on this single it's particularly effective.

Dutch indie-meisters back for the nth bite at the rock n roll cherry, this nip being just as erotic as any of the preceeding, if owing more to a cooly slutty Debbie Harry than usual. “Happy” being near perfect pop with surgically accurate drumming while “She Cuts A Dash” is staggering into Rezillos country with it’s old Adam Peroni riffs, but “Sofa Adventures” is best of breed here if only for it’s fuzz-pop-shake of a guitar riff that seems to mutate into a synth every now and then.

The EP opens with a possible single of the year; “Happy” is a song that should be used as a template for what indie-pop music is about. Warm and fuzzy, the essential ingredients of any decent tune, it reminds the listener of indie’s glorious days gone by, leaving you grinning like a fool. The rest of the EP is more synth driven than the opener. “She Cuts a Dash” is okay-ish but “Mellow” is almost perfect, replicating Broadcast’s finest moments with a dash of Saloon thrown in - probably! The EP finishes with “Sofa Adventures”, a much spunkier song planting itself firmly in the driving seat, dominated by the vocals of singer Martine. An incredibly infectious and bubbly EP well worth getting hold of.

These four babies pack more crooked hooks and infectious candour as was thought possible to shrink wrap into 12 minutes. ‘Happy’ opens the proceedings and bounces around the air space like a precious child high on e-numbers, so effervescent you’d swear the word was thought up with it in mind, imagine the distort pop shimmer of prime time Primitives being cross pollinated with the kaleidoscopic candy coated tang of Altered Images and on to that weld on one of the catchiest harmonies you’ll hear all year – kids, summer starts here. ‘She cuts a dash’ is equally charmed sounding like a fried Lush dispossessed of their mercurial wall of sound while nursing a dynamic that literally beats you to within an inch of your life. ‘Mellow’ oh for if it was, is instead, yes okay laid back and like wayward, lysergic electronic whirly pop that to these ears shapes up mid way through as though Kraftwerk’s calculators were all tripping and now playing lead roles in some oddly worrying children’s TV playground for forgotten show tunes featuring the Clangers and the residents of Magic Roundabout. Last up ‘Sofa Adventures’ offers the EP’s most punk derived moment, you know the score strutting guitars, Martine’s angelic vocals – look do yourself a favour and just buy the damn thing.

The Amsterdam duo are again on brilliant form, Martine's poppy vocals at the forefront of things on the jingly jangly 'Happy' and the more straight-forward guitar pop of 'She Cuts A Dash'. Things get a bit more experimental (think Stereolab) on the psychedelic electronica of 'Mellow', before returning to there more traditional sound on 'Sofa Adventures'.

Het schijfje Tune-Up van het Amsterdamse electro-pop duo Persil telt vier nummers. De eerste track Happy zou qua sfeer en geluid niet misstaan op een cd van Bettie Serveert. De lieve, zachte stem van Martine Brinksma klinkt als een klok. Een afwisselende en goede EP.

Wat was dat voor een rare droom? Persil in De Kuip en 50.000 mensen die samen met Martine in koor de langgerekte IIIIIIII meebrullen? Het zal niet gebeuren, maar de opener van de nieuwe single van Persil is een onweerstaanbaar catchy nummer dat het op zich best in zich heeft. In de beste Blondie/Belly traditie, maar dan wel met de Persil-knipoog, is 'Happy' in elk geval een liedje waar je erg vrol..., uh, gelukkig van wordt. Nu is geluk een erg vluchtig begrip en zo ook bij Persil is dit maar van korte duur, want de tweede track 'She Cuts A Dash' brengt meteen een onheilspellend en gejaagd gevoel over. Wanneer je dan aankomt bij het derde nummer 'Mellow' weet je al dat je die titel met meer dan een korrel zout mag nemen. Als dat mellow is, hoe komt het dan dat we elke keer de neiging moeten onderdrukken om op de bovenburen af te stappen met de vraag of ze niet zo met de meubels door de kamer willen schuiven? Misschien ligt het antwoord besloten in de naam van het laatste liedje van deze ep: 'Sofa Adventures', we raden u aan het zelf te ontdekken. Het duo laat op de nieuwe ep horen bepaald niet stil te staan in de ontwikkeling. Persil is op deze 4-tracker zowel meer poppy als meer experimenteel. Poppy, omdat de liedjes erg toegankelijk zijn en experimenteel omdat elk nummer vol zit met giergeluiden, drumratels, loeiende synthesizers en een aantal niet thuis te brengen noise-dingetjes. In 13 minuten gebeurt meer dan op veel andere cd's in 40 minuten. Zo stellen we voor de titel van dit nieuwe Persil-schijfje maar lichtjes om te dopen in: Tune-In! Doen!.

De meest lekkere popmuziek, is de popmuziek die uit je boxen spat. Het Amsterdamse Persil weet als geen ander hoe je dat voor elkaar moet krijgen, getuige hun geweldige cd Duotone. Ook in Engeland en de VS smullen ze van hun pakkende, met elektronica opgeleukte indierock. Nu is er een cd-ep Tune-Up waar ze nog een stapje verder gaan. Alles wordt net iets harder gespeeld en de pakkende muziek neemt je nu direct in de houdgreep. In hun geluid zitten elementen verpakt van Melys, Earwig, Pixies, Belly, Solex, My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab en The Wedding Present (waar ze in het voorprogramma stonden). De explosieve songs zitten sterk in elkaar en mogen gerekend worden tot het crème de la crème van de popmuziek. En dan zijn die 13 minuten wel erg snel voorbij!

Vier prachtige electropopliedjes. Opener ‘Happy’ doet als bijna perfecte popsong haar titel eer aan. Het lijkt in eerste instantie zelfs alsof er een ander Transformed Dreams-cd’tje in de speler zit, van Seedling of Melys. ‘She Cuts a Dash’ gaat ongeveer op dezelfde wijze verder. Een vlot gitaartje, een prettig refreintje. Bij track 3 ‘Mellow’ komt de elektronische kant van Persil wat meer tot uiting. Het bliepende outro zou niet misstaan als achtergrondmuziek bij een Nintendo-spelletje. Slotnummer ‘Sofa Adventures’ somt op het eind nog even alles op wat leuk is aan Persil. De Grandaddy-achtige combinatie van gitaren en elektronica, zang die aan andere Peel-favoriet Saloon doet denken en dezelfde catchyness als bijvoorbeeld ‘Traces of Knots’ van Duotone.  Tune-Up schept hoge verwachtingen voor de echte opvolger van het debuutalbum. En totdat die er is, is dit plaatje een uitstekend zoethoudertje.

Vier nieuwe nummers van de band die dankzij veel concerten één van mijn favoriete Nederlandse bandjes is geworden – weet je, laat dat Nederlandse ook maar gewoon weg, al heb ik dan wel heel veel favoriete bandjes – maar waarvan deze nummers om diezelfde reden niet echt nieuw klinken. Dat zijn ze overigens wel, op cd althans: ze zijn ook leuk. Leuk als in Persil-leuk, met hetzelfde soort electro-indiepop waar debuut Duotone al vol mee stond, maar deze nummers klinken nog wat voller, nog wat zelfverzekerder. En dus nog wat leuker.

Yet another joyous slice of Persil’s patented perky pop spliced with electronic invention. This is particularly the case with the b-sides, such as ‘Sofa Adventures’, which bend and twist relatively violently, while lead track ‘Happy’ is for all the C86 kids who stuck with their love of gorgeous melodies while embracing everything a computer could additionally bring to the party.
